Sárvár Arboretum

Sárvár

The Sárvár Arboretum is a place where the energy of the trees will surely recharge you.

If you visit Sárvár, don’t just relax in the baths—also take time to unwind in the green surroundings. For some reason, the trees here transmit the Earth’s beneficial energies much more strongly than elsewhere. Give it a try—hug a tree, maybe in the arboretum!

The Sárvár Arboretum is one of Hungary’s oldest collections, and one of the most significant in Vas County.

Gardening flourished here as far back as 1671, when Count Ferenc Nádasdy, the local judge at the time, was executed for his involvement in the Wesselényi Conspiracy, and his estates were confiscated. This caused the famous garden to fall into ruin, but a few fruit trees and a mixture of oaks remained, preserving the memory of its beginnings. In 1803, the garden was once again placed in knowledgeable hands. Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg-Este bought the castle and its surrounding land. Reviving the former garden from its ruined state was a difficult but beautiful task. Part of the area was replanted with fruit trees, while the rest slowly evolved into an English-style park, preserving the old oaks and trees. The plane trees planted in 1812 now have trunks with a diameter exceeding three meters. In keeping with the fashion of the time, yew, Japanese pagoda trees, and linden trees were predominantly planted. The area’s favorable climate for plant growth was provided by the Gyöngyös stream running through the park, and the fishpond, which helped maintain a stable groundwater level.
