Forest Bathing
What is forest bathing, really?
Is it soaking in a tub full of water in the middle of a forest? Meditation or a nature-awareness field trip? Or perhaps a retreat from the world?
Well, forest bathing is a unique, highly mindful, incredibly slow, and completely silent walk among trees—whether in a forest or a park—where our senses lead the way.
The goal is to connect with the forest and the trees through our senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and even taste—with joy, reverence, and wonder.
As we gently observe and walk in silence—with our phones on mute!—we breathe consciously and continuously. Eventually, we slow down, quieten our minds, and turn our attention to the trees around us.
We immerse ourselves in the forest’s essential power, in the mist of phytoncides—the essential oils emitted by trees. We sense the scent of forest soil, the early morning rain, and the invigorating and refreshing effect of the negatively charged ions in the forest air.
We open our senses to the forest, marvel at it, gaze with awe, and listen deeply. In these moments, we are truly present—we disconnect from everyday life and become part of nature.

How Does Forest Bathing Heal?
In recent decades, Japanese scientists have conducted extensive medical research proving that forest bathing—known in Japanese as shinrin-yoku—can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormone levels, and slow the heart rate.
Phytoncides, the essential oils released by trees, enhance the body's immune response against viruses and cancerous cells. Sleep duration increases, the body enters a deeper state of relaxation, and an overall sense of well-being improves.
A walk in the forest may not seem extraordinary—but its beneficial effects certainly are.
One particularly important research finding is that the positive effects of properly practiced forest bathing can last for a longer period—even 1 to 2 weeks after the experience.
Where Can You Go Forest Bathing in Sárvár?
Sárvár and its surroundings are truly rich in beautiful parks and forests—just think of the arboretum, the Castle Park (Várpark), Farkas Forest, the Hiking Forest (Kiránduló-erdő), Bajti, or Szatmár Forest. Any of these places can become your favorite forest bathing spot.
The best approach is to choose a familiar park or forest area, where you can immerse yourself—at your own pace and using forest bathing practices that will naturally evolve with experience—in the immune-boosting and health-preserving power of the forest.
Helpful Tips for Forest Bathing:
- Choose easy terrain for your forest bathing experience.
- Breathe consciously—slowly and deeply. Breathing is the most essential forest bathing practice.
- Move at a snail’s pace—no more than 1 km per hour.
- Pause often. Sit on a bench, relax with your eyes closed.
- Touching or hugging a tree trunk helps release inner tension—it's like “grounding” yourself in the most natural way.
- Stay silent. Conversation during forest bathing is unnecessary—it distracts from the essence of the experience.
